Valve, the company behind the Steam platform, is preparing to introduce local tax collection on transactions related to game purchases through the online store. Taxes will be charged in those U.S. states where they are mandated by law.
The new Steam system will allow users to see the exact amount of local tax charged on their purchase, giving them the opportunity to know whether their region of residence falls under states with mandatory tax collection.
This change has caused dissatisfaction among gamers and developers, who have expressed their discontent with the additional costs. Many gamers believe that digital versions of games should not be taxed, comparing it to a "tax on imaginary money."
