Former President of Peru Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for receiving $35 million in bribes from the Brazilian company Odebrecht. In exchange for the bribes, Toledo facilitated the construction of a highway connecting Brazil with southern Peru. The initial cost of the project was $507 million, but Peru ended up paying $1.25 billion.
Judge Ines Rojas noted that Toledo abused the trust of the people and his presidential duties. His lawyer stated that the sentence will be appealed. Toledo was extradited from the United States in 2022 after being arrested in 2019.
